Wood Paces MSU On First Day Of SEC Tournament

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Junior Ben Wood fired an opening-round 69 to lead the Mississippi State men's golf team to a 289 Friday at the SEC Championships in St. Simons Island, Ga.
Wood's 10th under-par round of the season tied him for 15th as the Bulldogs closed the first day of action in 14th.
“It was not a great day by any means, but I am pleased with the way our guys fought back and made some birdies coming home,” MSU coach Clay Homan said.
Fellow junior Tim Walker turned in a card of 72 that was good enough to tie for 39th position.
Bulldog freshmen Taylor Grant, redshirt freshman Johnny Newnham and sophomore Ben Follett-Smith all tied for 58th after firing identical 74s.
“We will work to get off to a better start tomorrow and try to get back to even par one shot at a time,” Homan said.
Three players tied for the individual lead at 5-under-par while No. 25 Alabama holds a five shot advantage over No. 7 LSU in the team standings.
The Maroon & White tees off the second round along with in state rival Ole Miss at 7:10 a.m. CT on Saturday.
