FLUSHING, N.Y. – With an impressive win on the first day of competition, Mississippi State's Jasmine Lee moved into the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Thursday, posting her fifth straight victory over an opponent ranked in the top 40. The tournament is the third major of the collegiate tennis season.
MSU's 23rd-ranked Lee ousted Florida's 38th-ranked Kourtney Keegan in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 Thursday morning at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Lee jumped out to an early 5-0 lead over the Gator foe in the first set. Keegan cut into the lead 5-1, but Lee regained control taking the first set 6-1. The second set was evenly matched at 1-1 early on, until Lee broke out for a 4-1 lead. Once again, the Gator tried to rally, but Lee was relentless and went on to take the set and the match 6-1, 6-2.
In Friday's round of 16, Lee is scheduled to face Oklahoma State's 92nd-ranked Katarina Adamovic. Adamovic advanced after upsetting Virginia's 8th-ranked and top-seeded Danielle Collins 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 on Thursday.
Lee improved her record to 11-3 for the fall slate, with eight top 70 wins to her credit, five in the top 40, and two in the top 10.
“Jasmine played a very strong match this morning,” head coach Daryl Greenan said. “She started strong and did a great job of neutralizing her opponent when they started playing more aggressively. It was a convincing win over a quality opponent.”
