Six MSU Players Reach Finals In Singles Draws At Roberta Alison

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – With day one of the tournament completed, the Mississippi State women's tennis team finished 13-1 in singles and 1-2 in doubles to cap a successful opening day at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic Friday. Six Bulldog players reached Saturday's title match of their respective singles draws.
State newcomer Caroline Kelly defeated Kennesaw State's Isabela Castro in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. She was later victorious in straight sets again against UT Chattanooga's Delaney Edwards 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Shelley Godwin Draw. MSU's Louise Ronaldson won a close 7-5 first set over Samford's Parapunova, but took control of the second set winning 6-2 and taking her opening match 7-5, 6-2 in the Meritt Emery Draw. The sophomore then won her semifinal contest against Tulane's Meredith Maltby 6-3, 6-2.
State's Jennifer Brown set back UT Chattanooga's Ali Storie in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 and then finished the day undefeated after holding off DePaul's Rebeca Mitrea 6-0, 7-6 in the Susan Carver Draw's semifinals. Bulldog Kristina Vozniak, playing in the Paulina Bigos Draw, was victorious over UAB's Elaine Simon 6-2, 6-3 to start her day. The sophomore also won her second match in straight sets over DePaul's Patricia Lancranjan 6-2, 6-4 to move into the final. State's Madison Harrison defeated Samford's Jessica Northcutt in 6-1, 6-2 in her first singles affair. She later won a three-set battle over DePaul's Marina Cozac 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 to move to the championship of the Becca Baum Draw.
In the Courtney McLane Draw, State rookie Anastasia Rentouli bested UT Chattanooga's Kayla Jones 6-0, 1-0, ret., and then went on to defeat Ole Miss' Tea Jandric in 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 for a berth in the title match of that bracket. MSU's 83rd-ranked Georgiana Patrasc set back DePaul's 119th-ranked Yulia Shupenia 7-6, 6-2 to open action. The MSU veteran was then upended by host Alabama's Andie Daniell in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals.
The day began with one round of doubles.
The State tandem of Vozniak and Harrison was able to overcome Troy's Sanae Ohta and Efriliya Herlina 8-2 to advance to the semifinals in the Jenny Whalen Draw. MSU's Kelly, teaming with Samford's Iva Parapunova, was able to edge out Kennesaw State's Cristina Martin and Alexandra Mercado in a close 8-7 victory in the Bianca Svensson Draw.
The Bulldog duo of Patrasc and Rentouli fell in a close 8-6 battle to Kansas' Janet Koch and Nina Khmelnitckaia in their opener in the Emily Zabor Draw. MSU's sophomore duo of Brown and Ronaldson was defeated by UAB's Amy Lowther and Catherine Ragon 8-4 in the Mary Anne Macfarlane Draw.
Saturday's action will begin at 8:00 a.m. CT, due to the threat of inclement weather.
"I am very pleased and impressed with our results today," MSU head coach Daryl Greenan said. "The girls fought hard and won some tough battles. If we compete tomorrow anywhere close to the way we did in singles today we should claim some titles."
