BRIDGEPORT, W. VA – Following a brisk day at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate that featured below freezing temperatures early in the morning, Ben Wood fired a 73 to stand in eighth place.
The senior from Florence, Ala., birdied two of his last four holes to help his move up the leaderboard.
As a team, Mississippi State is 13th after posing a 307.
“It was a disappointing day. We have to execute at a higher level, simple as that,” MSU coach Clay Homan said.
Sophomore Taylor Grant tallied a single-round total of 77 to head into Tuesday's final round tied for 35th.
Joining Wood and Grant in the Top 50 is Ben Follett-Smith, who shot a 78 to leave him in a tie for 46th.
Making his Maroon and White season debut, Tim Walker recorded 80 to put him into 68th place.
Rounding out the MSU lineup, junior Jackson Dick carded an 82 to tie him for 74th.
“This is a demanding golf course with firm, fast greens,” Homan said. “However, if you hit the shots, you can shoot a good score. It's time we start playing like the team we can be.”
No. 11 Penn State holds a one shot lead over second place UConn, while Marshall's Clark Robinson leads all individuals after posting a 69.
MSU is back on the course for the second and final round Tuesday at 8 a.m. CT Tuesday.
