BRIDGEPORT, W. VA – Looking to bounce back after a slow start, the Mississippi State men's golf team shot a final round 288 on Tuesday to jump 10 spots into a third-place finish at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate.
The No. 3 standing is the highest team finish since winning the Reunion Intercollegiate in 2014.
“I'm so proud of the way we fought back after yesterday's performance,” MSU coach Clay Homan said. “We had guys step up today and play with more confidence and self belief.”
Leading the Bulldog attack on the leaderboard, senior Ben Wood rifled five birdies in his last 10 holes to finish with a four-under-par 68 and a tie for third overall.
Wood's tied for third place is his fourth-career top 5 finish and second on the season.
“Ben put himself in contention to win and today's 68 was really impressive,” Homan said.
Joining Wood in the top 15, Ben Follett-Smith improved seven shots on round one to turn a scorecard of 71. Follett-Smith's play propelled the junior 31 spots up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 15th.
Junior Jackson Dick improved 10 shots from the first round to shoot a second 72 and finish in a tie for 43rd.
Joining Dick in a tie for 43rd, sophomore Taylor Grant turned in a scorecard of 77.
Rounding out the MSU lineup, Tim Walker shaved three shots off of his first round score to shot a 77 and tie for 58th.
“Momentum in golf is huge and today we got it going in our direction” Homan said.
No. 11 Penn State won the team title by 10 shots over the field, while Cincinnati's Davis Baxter won the individual title by one stroke.
The Maroon and White finish out the fall slate on Oct. 26 at the Quail Creek Collegiate Invitational in Vero Beach, Fla.
