AUBURN, Ala. – With the second day of USTA/ITA Southern Regionals in the books, Caroline Kelly, Georgiana Patrasc and Anastasia Rentouli are all still alive in the singles main draw of their respective divisions heading into Sunday.
Patrasc and Rentouli advanced to the quarterfinals in the singles A Draw after ousting SEC foes Saturday. The 83rd-ranked Patrasc, a 5-8 seed, faced LSU's 106th-ranked Abby Owens, who she defeated in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 16. Rentouli won a close tiebreaker over Ole Miss's 87th-ranked Natalie Suk, a 5-8 seed, helping the Bulldog true freshman capture her first career ranked win 7-6(2), 6-2.
State's newcomer Kelly advanced to the semifinals in the singles B Draw. The Bulldog rookie ousted Samford's Annika Hepp in a three set victory 6-2, 1-6, 1-0(7).
Saturday began with the round of 16 and quarterfinal rounds of doubles.
In the doubles A Draw, MSU's sophomore tandem Jennifer Brown and Kristina Vozniak shined once again as they registered a huge upset of host Auburn's 29th-ranked and top-seeded Pleun Burgmans and Paula de Mann 8-5 to advance to the quarterfinals. However, the duo's run would end there, falling to Ole Miss's Mai El Kamash and Arianne Hartono 8-4.
In the doubles A Draw consolation, the Bulldog tandem of Patrasc and Rentouli defeated both Louisiana Monroe's Petra Horakova 8-5 and Tiffany Mylonas and Louisiana Tech's Alexandra Starkova and Yuchia Chen 8-6 to advance to Sunday's consolation semifinals. State's Madison Harrison and Jasmine Lee won their first consolation match over Louisiana Tech's Jazmin Britos and Marta Sramkova 8-4, but then fell in the quarterfinals to South Alabama's 60th-ranked Laura Valkova and Alexandria Stiteler 8-6.
In the doubles B Draw consolation, MSU's Kelly and Louise Ronaldson advanced to the semifinal round after setting back Louisiana Tech's Haley Ballinger and Alba Perny 8-3. The duo then dropped a competitive match to Northwestern State's Polina Ivanova and Iryna Vardanian 8-6.
