MSU?s Lee Crowned Consolation Champion At Riviera/ITA All-American
October 11, 2015 | Women's Tennis
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – With her second victory over a top 10 opponent in as many days, Mississippi State's Jasmine Lee claimed the main draw consolation title at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Sunday. The tournament is the second major of the collegiate tennis season.
State's 23rd-ranked junior faced Virginia's top-seeded and No. 3-ranked Julia Elbaba in the finals. Lee jumped out into an early 3-0 lead in the first set. The Cavalier star won the next game to make it 3-1, but Lee did not relinquish her control of the set, winning it 6-1. In the second set, Lee commandeered another 3-0 lead. Elbaba fought back to make it close at 5-4, but Lee was unstoppable and won the final game of the day to take the set and the match 6-1, 6-4.
With Sunday's victory, Lee receives an automatic berth into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 12-15, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. With that berth, Lee, who joined MSU in January, has now qualified for all four collegiate major events that have been played (NCAA Championships, Oracle/ITA Masters, Riviera/ITA All-American, ITA National Indoors) since then.
“Jasmine had another incredible experience today,” assistant coach Sachin Kirtane said. “Her serve was another big factor leading to her victory. We are so proud of what she has accomplished this past week. She has sealed a position at the indoor national championships and we look forward to bigger and better things in the future.”
Lee finished her stellar run in at the All-American this week with a 7-1 record with six top 70 wins (four in the top 25 and two in the top 10). Her only loss came in the main draw to the top-seeded (second-ranked) player in the event.
