MSU Volleyball Falls In Three Sets At Arkansas
September 28, 2014 | Volleyball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Unable to overcome a solid hitting effort by the Arkansas Razorbacks (8-7, 2-0 SEC), the Mississippi State volleyball Bulldogs (5-12, 0-2 SEC) dropped a 3-0 decision Sunday afternoon at Arkansas' Barnhill Arena.
Arkansas got off to a hot start in the match, taking the first set, 25-14. The Razorbacks used a series of runs, including a 6-0 strek late to pull away for a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Bulldogs would find a groove in the second set behind five kills from Chelsea Duhs. Both sides traded blows, with each grabbing the lead throughout the set. However, a 5-0 run by the Hogs with the score tied at 14-14 would be the difference. Arkansas would go on to take the set, 25-19, and a 2-0 lead.
The Razorbacks would seal it in the third set, but not without a fight from the Maroon and White. Duhs, Alex Warren and Leticia Valente all earned three kills a piece in the final frame as MSU would cut the lead to one midway through. Despite the run, Arkansas would fend off the Bulldogs behind 13 kills and five blocks, going on to take the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.
Duhs led the Bulldogs with 11 kills, which also tied for the overall match high. Shelby Anderton turned in a season-high 25 assists on the day, while Payton Harris put up 13 digs. Duhs, Valente, Bali Leffall-Young and Kelsey Stommes all earned a block a piece.
MSU returns home for its next action, as it hosts South Carolina and No. 10 Florida at Newell-Grissom. The Bulldogs face USC on Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. CT, and close out against the Gators on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. Friday's broadcast will be on SEC Network +, while Sunday's match will be nationally televised on the SEC Network.
