September 13, 2014 | Cross Country
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Mississippi State continued to impress on the cross country trails Saturday, as both the men and women recorded Top 10 finishes at the Commodore Classic in Nashville.
The women's squad earned a second-place finish, while the men finished seventh.
Leading the way for the women was sophomore Rhianwedd Price in second place at 16:57.77 in the 5K.
“I think the race went very well today, but toward the end I didn't have as much as I could have to finish stronger,” Price said. “I think my team performed really well. I thought we ran good overall as a whole.”
Also running Saturday were Lisa Ziegler (16th, 17:31.42), Cornelia Griesche (19th, 17:37.49, 35, Jodie McGuff (35th 18:10.54) and freshman Mia Meydrich (59th, 18:28.85).
The women's second-place finish landed them behind Vanderbilt. MSU beat out SEC rival Ole Miss, which finished sixth.
“I thought Rhianwedd ran a very good race, but she got a little overly excited in the beginning and went out a little fast,” MSU coach Houston Franks said. “Lisa ran a great race and battled very tough in the middle of the race. Cornelia ran well, as she is starting to get back where she needs to be.”
On the men's side, finishing in ninth was Damian Roszko with a time of 24:58.45. Also helping led the team to a Top 10 finish was junior Curtis Kelly (18th, 25:20.53).
Following Kelly in MSU's Top 5 were Patrick Monaghan (61st, 26:03.02), Mathew Dunn (63rd, 26:04.86) and Branden Nosker (105th, 26.52.17).
“I'm really happy with where we are at, but we still have to get a lot better to accomplish what we need to,” Franks said. “Vanderbilt is one of the best teams in the country and they showed it today. We've got to keep getting better. “
Mississippi State will travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to compete in the Paul Short Invitational on Oct. 4.
