Bulldogs Wrap Up Day One Of Sugar Grove Regional

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Fighting rough conditions on a wet Rich Harvest Farms course, the Mississippi State men's golf team carded a 27-over-par to open postseason play at the NCAA Sugar Grove Regional.
MSU (315) tied with Cleveland State for 10th place on Thursday, five spots back of the cut off line for the NCAA Championship. The top five teams from the Sugar Grove Regional will advance to the NCAA Championship slated for May 23-28.
No. 21 UAB leads the pack after round one, shooting a 4-over-par score. No. 9 Illinois is a close second at 5-over-par.
“Obviously we struggled quite a bit,” Bulldog coach Clay Homan said. “This is a course that requires accuracy and precision and when you don't execute, you pay. We just couldn't seem to put enough good shots together. It's certainly not over, but we will have to play much better.”
Senior Axel Boasson turned in the Bulldogs' best score for the opening round, shooting a 4-over-par 76 to tie for 23rd with 36 holes left to play.
Finishing Thursday tied for 38th overall was senior Barrett Edens. The Okolona, Miss., native turned in a 7-over-par 79.
The duo of senior Joe Sakulpolphaisan and sophomore Ben Wood, each tied for 47th overall after shooting an 8-over-par 80 for the opening round.
Rounding out the Maroon and White scorecard was senior Chad Ramey. The Fulton, Miss., native turned in a 9-over-par 81 to tie for 54th overall.
Homan's squad will tee off at 8:55 a.m. alongside Cleveland State and New Mexico State for Friday's second round.
