Bulldogs Complete Comeback To Win Back-To-Back Old Waverly Collegiate Championships

West Point, Miss. – Propelled by a career-low 65 from senior Barrett Edens, Mississippi State captured the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in exciting fashion with a one-stroke victory.
MSU trailed Cincinnati by 12 strokes after the opening round at Old Waverly, but the Bulldogs quickly gained ground by shooting 13-under-par for the final two rounds. The Maroon and White overtook the Bearcats (4-under-860) with a 5-under-par 859, claiming their first win of the season and back-to-back Old Waverly Collegiate Championships.
“Heading into postseason this is exactly what we needed,” Coach Clay Homan said after the Bulldogs' victory. “We needed a boost to remind us that we are a pretty good team, because we just haven't really shown that this year. We still have a lot of confidence in ourselves and we believe we can make a run deep into the postseason.”
The Bulldogs improved their record to 76-48-4 overall on the season after the win, while beating out nine teams who made postseason appearances last year.
Okolona, Miss., native Edens' captured co-medalist after firing off a 9-under-par 207, tying with Marco Iten of Austin Peay. The 207 total score tied for the lowest of his career since Edens finished seventh overall at the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate.
“For Barrett personally, I know it's gratifying considering how much work he has put in,” Homan said of Edens' finish. “He is a fifth-year senior, and he led us to victory today.”
In the first win of his collegiate career, Edens shot 10-under-par for the final 36 holes. The co-medalist became the third Bulldog (Ramey & Sakulpolphaisan) this season to finish with at least a share of first place.
“In my mind I thought if I shot at least a 67 I would have a chance to win it,” Edens said of his third-round preparation. “Once I got to a 67, I kind of forgot about that and tried to start going a little deeper. I knew I had a good chance, but I wasn't really sure because you never know.”
Edens sank 14 birdies in his final two rounds, after only knocking in one his opening round.
Senior Chad Ramey picked up the 17th Top-10 finish of his career, after tying for seventh overall at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. The Fulton, Miss., native turned in a 5-under-par 67 for the third round, giving him a 2-under-par 214 for the tourney.
Rounding out the Maroon and White scorecard from Old Waverly was senior Joe Sakulpolphaisan (35th), sophomore Ben Wood (41st) and senior Axel Boasson (55th). The trio finished within a stroke of each other at 221, 222 and 223.
Freshmen Dalton Conn, Ben Follett-Smith and Jackson Dick competed as individuals for the Bulldogs at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. Conn (6-over-par 222) tied for 41st overall, while Follett-Smith (8-over-par 224) and Dick (10-over-par 226) tied for 60th and 65th respectively.
Blake Kelley of South Alabama became the first golfer in the tournament's history to ace a hole, after knocking in a hole in one on No.12 in the second round.
Homan's squad will tee off next at the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate in Madison, Miss., on April 14-15. The Bulldogs will be defending their crown, as they won the Intercollegiate last season with an 18-under-par 846.
