Rain-Shortened Day Leaves Bulldogs In Fourth
April 08, 2014 | Men's Golf
West Point, Miss. – A rain-soaked Old Waverly Golf Club became the backdrop for Mississippi State on Monday, as the Bulldogs teed off the second-annual Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, finishing tied for fourth before darkness sat in.
Teams teed off from the soggy greens at 10 a.m., grinding through round one, as darkness ended play on Monday with teams in the midst of round two. The second round will be completed on Tuesday, with an 8:30 tee time, followed by the conclusion of the third round.
“I think our guys played well in the second round, with being 6-under with about two or three holes to play,” Coach Clay Homan said. “We rely on our seniors who play a lot of golf and know what it takes to be successful. I feel good about our chances tomorrow, because we should know what to do out here and should know how this golf course plays. We need to come out tomorrow and finish out the second round strong, then post a good score for the third round and see what happens.”
MSU sits six shots back of Ole Miss for the lead, while tied with Florida at 2-over-par.
The senior trio of Barrett Edens, Chad Ramey and Axel Boasson finished Monday within the Top-15. All three golfers are currently 2-under-par for the second round.
Rounding out the Bulldog scorecard was sophomore Ben Wood and senior Joe Sakulpolphaisan, both golfers are tied for 35th overall after shooting 4-over-par for the tourney.
Freshmen Dalton Conn, Ben Follett-Smith and Jackson Dick competed as individuals for the Bulldogs at the Old Waverly Collegiate. Conn sits tied for 30th overall, while Follett-Smith and Dick are tied for 60th after 7-over-par days.
Blake Kelley of South Alabama became the first golfer in the tournament's history to ace a hole, after knocking in a hole in one on No.12 in the second round.
Homan's squad will tee off on No. 16 alongside Florida and Ole Miss on Tuesday.
