November 14, 2014 | Cross Country
STARKVILLE, Miss. – With an individual third place-finish, Rhianwedd Price qualified for NCAA Nationals Friday morning at the NCAA South Regionals.
Price clinched a new personal best of 19:37.20 in the 6K. Her effort propelled the Bulldogs to a sixth-place finish as a team.
Following Price was sophomore Lisa Ziegler with a 21st-place (20:23.20) finish. Immediately behind Ziegler was Cornelia Griesche who finished 22nd (20:24.80). Finishing out MSU's Top 5 were seniors Jodie McGuff (78th, 21:17.30) and Carmen Brothers (99th, 21:32.60).
“We went in wanting to make Top 5 and ended up sixth, but I felt we had a good showing out there today,” MSU coach Houston Franks said. “Carmen Brothers picked up the slack today and ran a personal best. She really came through in the fifth spot.”
Price, Ziegler and Griesche were also named to the All-Region team.
On the men's side, the team placed 14th overall. Senior Damian Roszko led the men's squad with a 17th place-finish (30:57.60). Roszko was also named to the All-Region team.
The men's Top 5 runners consisted of Andrew Monaghan (58th, 31:50.10), Mathew Dunn (65th, 31:58.00), Patrick Monaghan (82nd, 32:18.20) and Curtis Kelly (91st, 32:28.10)
“For the men, we really wanted to finish in the Top 10,” Franks said. ”There were a lot of close teams; we were only a few points out of fifth. We are on the verge of where we want the program to be.”
NCAA Championships will be held on Saturday Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
With the cross country season in the books, MSU's dual-sport athletes will now turn their focus to indoor track and field which begins in January.
