Newnham Tied For Lead After First Round at NJCAA District 4 Preview
November 10, 2014 | Men's Golf
ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. – Johnny Newnham is tied for the lead with Central Alabama's Chase Humber and South Alabama's Ally Purdy after the first day of the NJCAA District 4 Preview.
Newnham's 1-under-par 71 is the lowest round of his short career at Mississippi State.
“The Idea for this week was to have our four individuals compete under tournament conditions and see where they are,” coach Clay Homan said. “Johnny had a nice round today with a 71.”
T.J. Morgan and Ben Follett-Smith joined Newnham in the Top 10. Follett-Smith and Morgan both shot 74, tying them for 10th after Monday's round.
Concluding the Bulldog scorecard is Taylor Grant tying for 45th with an 81 in his first collegiate action.
“T.J. and Ben had 74's and will look to build on that. Taylor Struggled with the putter but managed to hit 12 greens in regulation,” Homan said. “Now that the guys are a little more familiar with the course and how it is playing, I would expect the scores to improve some tomorrow.”
All MSU players competed as individuals. Host Central Alabama has a four-shot lead over second place Darton State College.
MSU tees off the second and final round at 8:00 Tuesday morning.
