MSU?s Corder Claims Flight 3 Singles Title At Wildcat Invitational

Rookie Alex Corder capped off her undefeated performance in this weekend's tournament, by taking the championship of Flight 3 over host Arizona's Inge Hendrik, pulling out a tough three-set affair, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Corder's win was her fifth straight singles' victory, moving to 5-2 for the fall season.
Meanwhile, freshman Jennifer Brown also advanced to the championship of Flight 1, but fell to Miriam Rosell of Texas-San Antonio, 6-4, 6-0. The loss was Brown's first of the fall, now 5-1.
MSU also earned three victories in the consolation brackets Sunday. In Flight 1, freshman Louise Ronaldson came away with a 6-4, 6-7(2), 1-0(8) victory over Erin Gebes of Marquette. Sophomore Timea Guibe came from behind to earn a gritty 1-6, 6-4, 1-0(5) victory over Marquette's Ali Dawson in Flight 2, while Naomi Tran earned a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Texas State's Shannon Beckett in the same draw.
The Bulldogs wrapped up doubles play in the event by claiming consolation victories. In Flight 1, the freshman combo of Corder and Ronaldson took an 8-2 victory over Jeannez Daniel and Duda Santos of UTEP, while Brown and Guibe earned an 8-4 decision over Jacobea Junger and Miriam Rosell of UTSA. Tran also earned a split match victory, teaming with Sharon Coone of New Mexico for an 8-6 victory over TSU's Katy Collins and Maddie Moore in Flight 2.
Mississippi State will be back in action this weekend, as the team will compete in the ITA Southern Region Indoor Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Action will begin on Friday on the campus of the University of Alabama.
