Brown, Corder Advance To Wildcat Invitational Singles Finals

TUCSON, Ariz. – After going a combined 11-2 on Friday, the Mississippi State women's tennis team continued play on Saturday in the Wildcat Invitational, with two rounds of doubles and a round of singles. Two MSU rookies are into the finals of their respective singles draws.
Two Bulldogs advanced to the championship of their respective singles draws on Sunday. Freshman Jennifer Brown is into the championship of Flight 1, as she held off Marquette's Erin Gebes, saving two match points for a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5) victory. Fellow freshman Alex Corder defeated UTSA's Alena Shichkova, 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals of Flight 3 to move into the finals of that draw.
State's other remaining main draw singles entrant, also in Flight 1, was Ronaldson who fell 6-1, 6-3 to UTSA's Miriam Rosell.
In Flight 1 doubles Saturday, MSU's freshman duo of Corder and Ronaldson defeated UTEP's Devina Meza and Lois Wagenvoort, 8-3, while Brown and Timea Guibe took an 8-7(7) decision from UTEP's duo of Jeannez Daniel and Duda Santos. In Flight 2, senior Naomi Tran also continued play with New Mexico's Sharon Coone, defeating UTSA's tandem of Irene Gandara and Nicole Karaklis, 8-6.
However, MSU would struggle in the semifinal round later in the afternoon, as all three doubles teams would fall in tough tiebreakers. In Flight 1, Corder and Ronaldson fell to Arizona's Shayne Austin and Hanna Sohn, 8-7(2), while Brown and Guibe also dropped a tough 8-7(1) decision to Marquette's pair of Erin Gebes and Ana Pimienta. Tran and Coone also fell in Flight 2, 8-7(5) to Rebecca Costa and Madison Porter of Colorado State.
MSU also picked up two wins in the consolation singles bracket Saturday, as Tran defeated MU's Ali Dawson, 7-5, 7-5 in Flight 2, while Guibe took a hard-fought 1-6, 6-3, 1-0(5) decision over Shannon Beckett of Texas State, also in Flight 2 action.
Mississippi State will wrap up play in the Wildcat Invitational on Sunday.
