Wood Picks Up Highest Career Finish At Bridgestone Golf Collegiate
October 27, 2013 | Men's Golf
After firing a 2-over 74 on Saturday, Wood came into Sunday's final round tied for 22nd overall. The Florence, Ala., native put together an impressive day by shooting a 3-under 69 and knocking down seven birdies.
MSU shot a 12-over 588 from the Grandover Resort, tying VCU for ninth place. North Carolina held on to first place with a 5-under 571, giving the Tar Heels the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate title.
“We got off to the start we wanted to today, going seven under through our first nine holes,” head coach Clay Homan said. “Unfortunately, we couldn't keep it going and stumbled down the stretch. Ben Wood gave us a good outing and was in contention to win, so hopefully he can gain confidence from what he did well today.”
The Greensboro area was blanketed with a heavy frost on Saturday morning, causing the tee time to be delayed until 10 a.m. CST for golfers. Because of the time lost, tournament officials decided to change the previous three-round format to a two-round format.
Thailand native and Bulldog senior Joe Sakulpolphaisan put together a 1-over 73 on Sunday to aid his 4-over 148 total score, giving him a 30th place card.
Seniors Chad Ramey and Barrett Edens each shot a 7-over 151 over the weekend to tie for 52nd overall at the Bridgestone, as true freshman Ben Follett-Smith turned in a 10-over 154 to tie for 64th.
Homan's squad will wrap up the fall season in style from Hawaii on Nov. 4-6, for the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational.
