September 22, 2012 | Men's Golf
FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Twelve days removed from its last comeback, the Mississippi State men's golf team grinded out another fantastic second round to climb into a tie for third place at the Mason Randolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt.
Chad Ramey and Axel Boasson led the charge as the Bulldogs fired a 282, an 11-shot improvement from Friday's opening round, to leap six spots on the leaderboard into a tie with Georgia State at seven-over 575.
"We got two very good rounds from Axel Boasson and Chad Ramey today to get us back into the tournament, " said head coach Clay Homan of MSU's second-round performance. "The other guys hung in there when they weren't playing their best. We need to come out tomorrow and finish strong."
After opening the tournament with a 74, the Fulton, Miss., native answered with a 68 at the Legends Club on Saturday to sit in a tie for 11th place with an even-par 142 heading into Sunday's final round.
Boasson rallied from an opening-round 76 by recording six birdies on Saturday en route to a personal-low 67 (-4) that vaulted him into a tie for 16th place.
Robi Calvesbert enters Sunday's final round seeking a second-straight top 25 finish after he wrapped Saturday in a tie for 20th with a 3-over-par 74.
Junior Joe Sakulpolphaisan fired a 75 to sit in a tie for 36th, while sophomore Fletcher Johnson rounded out MSU's team scoring with a 73 that placed him in 79th.
The Maroon and White begins Sunday's final round at 9 a.m. The Dawgs sit 11 shots back of the lead held by the host Commodores. Oklahoma's Abraham Ancer tops the individual leaderboard with a 7-under 135.
