Rowland Three Shots Back Of First, Johnson Leads Individual Event
February 21, 2012 | Men's Golf
Rowland is currently tied for fourth with Tyler Klava from South Alabama after turning in a 2-under-par 142. The duo trails Andrew Cho of Middle Tennessee State following his 5-under-par 139 in Monday's first two rounds.
"Alex had a solid day," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "He has the opportunity to win his first collegiate event tomorrow with a solid round."
The Bulldogs' 293-290 earned them an eighth-place sitting with 18 holes remaining, trailing No. 22 Illinois, who is currently fifth, by just five strokes.
Middle Tennessee State tops the leaderboard after finishing with a solid 6-under-par 570.
Chad Ramey chased Rowland into the clubhouse with a 1-over-par 145, earning a tie for 24th. John Darden and Clay Bounds each turned in a 4-over-par 148, while redshirt freshman Tyler Smith rounded out the MSU leaderboard with a 156.
"We had a perfect day for scoring," Homan said. "We just left too many shots out there, particularly on the greens. Tee-to-green we weren't any different from the tournament leader, but we have to putt better. It's as simple as that."
In the USA Individual Tournament, freshman Fletcher Johnson holds a one-stroke lead after firing a 1-over-par 72. Alex Hoffman of Memphis and Will Snipes of Vanderbilt each turned in 2-overs.
Barrett Edens and Mike Genovese are each in the Top 10 in the individual event as well. Edens is in fourth after a 3-over-par and Genovese is tied for sixth after his 76.
The individual tournament is running concurrent with the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. While the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate is a team event played on the Crossings Course at Magnolia Grove, the USA Individual Tournament is played on the Falls Course.
Final-round action begins 8 a.m. CST on Tuesday. Live stats for the team event will be available through HailState.com.
