Rowland Claims Share Of Mobile Bay Intercollegiate Title
February 21, 2012 | Men's Golf
Rowland turned in back-to-back 71's during Monday's first two rounds and posted a 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday to secure part of the lead over a pair of Memphis Tigers, Jonathan Fly and Jack Belote. The Houston-native's win is the first individual title by an MSU linkster since Noah Goldman won the 2009 Troy Invitational medalist. He tied with Lee Bedford from Wake Forest atop the leaderboard.
"I'm really excited about the win," Rowland said. "I felt like I put three solid rounds together and had a few up-and-downs toward the end to keep me going. I didn't have my best day putting, but I had a good day tee-to-green."
"I'm very proud of Alex," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "He played great and it's good to get a Bulldog back in the winner's circle."
The win by Rowland helped the Bulldogs capture their sixth-consecutive Top 10 finish, the longest such streak since the 2007 squad opened with eight-straight Top 10's.
After opening with a 293, MSU used a 290 and 291 to secure a seventh-place finish in this year's event. The 10-over 874 is the team's second-best tourney tally of the season.
Sophomore Chad Ramey followed Rowland with a 1-over-par 217 and a tie for fifteenth. This is the Fulton-natives second consecutive and fourth overall Top 25 of the year.
In only his second tournament appearance of the season, junior John Darden turned in a 7-over-par 223. Senior Clay Bounds chased Darden into the clubhouse with an 8-over-par 224, while redshirt freshman Tyler Smith rounded out the Bulldog leaderboard with a 230.
"As a team, we got off to a great start today and really had a chance to move up the leader board," Homan said. "We just couldn't capitalize down the stretch, and that hurt us a bit."
MSU returns to action March 9 at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla.
