
Bogaerts, Two Doubles Teams Into Semis At ITA Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. - Romain Bogaerts headlined another great day from the Bulldog tennis team as Mississippi State advance three into main draw semifinal play Saturday at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships. State advanced one into the singles main draw semifinals and two into the doubles semis.
The rookie Bogaerts upset LSU's 58th-nationally ranked and seventh-seeded Chris Simpson 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the semis of the Auburn-hosted tournament.
In other quarterfinal action, State's No. 47/fifth seed Malte Stropp dropped his match to Alabama's Becker O'Shaughnessey in a tough 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 battle. MSU's Jordan Angus fell to Ole Miss' No. 5-ranked and No. 1 seed Nik Scholtz in another fierce battle 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-5. Bulldog No. 41 James Chaudry, the fourth seed, dropped his match to No. 56 and sixth seed William Kallberg of Ole Miss 6-3, 6-4.
The MSU doubles duo of Chaudry and Stefan Vinti took care of business Saturday, upending LSU's third-seeded duo of Simpson and Stefan Szacinski 8-3 in the round of 16. They followed up by defeating Brian Conlon and Stuart Kenyon of Alabama 8-2 to advance to the semifinals.
Also advancing to the doubles semis was the No. 41-ranked and second-seeded MSU duo of Angus and Stropp, who defeated the UAB tandem of Chris Helliar and Lucas Dirube 8-4 and LSU's eighth-seeded Roger Anderson and Tam Trinh 8-1 in the quarterfinals.
The doubles team of Zach White and Ethan Wilkinson fell to Alabama's duo of Danill Proskura and David Vieyra 8-6 to fall short of a quarterfinals bid.
In consolation singles play, White defeated Tulane's Rodrigo Rappacciolo 6-2, 6-2 to advance into quarterfinal play. There, White overwhelmed Ole Miss' Zack Wilder 6-3, 6-3 to earn a spot in the semifinals Sunday.
State's Wilkinson came back from a 5-2 deficit in the final set to defeat Garrison Laduca of Samford 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) to begin his day in consolation action. However, Wilkinson dropped his quarterfinal match to Troy's Anas Rouchdi 6-2, 6-3.
State's Bogaerts will face Alabama's O'Shaughnessey at 10 a.m. CT Sunday with a spot in the championship match on the line. The No. 41 duo of Angus and Stropp will face Alabama's Vieyra and Proskura at 2 p.m. in the semifinals. On the opposite side of the bracket, Chaudry and Vinti will compete against in-state rivals Matt Frost and Andrew Goodwin of Southern Miss, also scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
