State Ends Day One At Sixth Place With Two Rounds Played
October 16, 2012 | Men's Golf
Play was suspended late Monday night, with nine teams unable to finish round two. MSU, along with Middle Tennessee State and UAB, was able to wrap up round two before the dark set in on the Old Overton Country Club.
"Tee to green we played o.k.," Bulldog head coach Clay Homan said. " We shot ourselves in the foot by compounding mistakes around the green. You have to keep it under the hole at Old Overton and when you don't you just have to take your medicine. Tomorrow is a new day, so hopefully we learned a little something from today."
State turned in a 29-over-par 589, before the night fell on the Old Overton Country Club. The Bulldogs shot a 16-over-par to begin the day and closed out day one with a second-round 13-over-par. The Florida Gators are currently leading the pack with an 8-over-par going into the final day of action.
Senior Robi Calvesbert, along with juniors Axel Boasson and Chad Ramey, helped keep MSU in the hunt on Monday. The veteran Dawgs all finished within the Top 25 after two rounds played.
Calvesbert began the tourney by posting a 6-over-par round one, but the Puerto Rican native fought back to fire off a 1-over-par for Monday's second round. Calvesbert ended day one tied for 20th with his 7-over-par total.
The Icelander Boasson had the best performance for State on day one. The junior shot a 1-over-par round one to help out the Bulldogs' cause. That score combined with his 4-over-par second round, gave Boasson a 5-over-par 145.
Ramey, whose name is becoming commonplace on the Top 25 leaderboard, fired off an 8-over-par on Monday. The junior is currently sitting in a tie for 25th spot, if his finish holds Ramey will have posted his 11th-stragiht Top 25 finish.
Playing in his first collegiate tournament on the Bulldogs' team scorecard was true freshman Haraldur Magnus. The Iceland native shot a 9-over-par 149 to finish the first two rounds of the Jerry Pate. Magnus is currently slated in a tie for 29th.
Rounding out the scoring for the Maroon and White was junior Joe Sakulpolphaisan. The Thailand native shot a 14-over-par to end Monday's action, leaving him at the 50th spot on the Jerry Pate leaderboard.
Homan's squad will conclude the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate with a Tuesday morning 8:30 tee time.
