Mississippi State Completes Action At Auburn Invitational
January 22, 2012 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After a hard fought two days of competition, Mississippi State is returning to Starkville with two wins and a handful of Top 10 finishes.
"It was a hard day for our athletes," coach Steve Dudley said. "The competition was tougher than we have previously seen, but we gave it our all and we leave here today, go home and apply the lessons learned to help us in the future."
Favian Cowards was the top finishing Lady Bulldog with her fifth place finish in the weight throw (61-07 ½). Cowards also competed on Saturday in the shot put (44-04 ¾) where she finished 12th.
Joining Cowards in the Top 10 was Erica Bougard with her seventh place finish in the long jump and the 4x400m squad of Brittany Covington, Bougard, Ocian Archer and Kenishia Carey who finished sixth with a time of 3:48.82.
"The competition here was some of the best," Dudley stated. "Competing against athletes like these will only make our girls stronger and better as the year goes on."
In the final event of the day, the Bulldog 4x400m relay team captured the school's second victory. The foursome of Anthony Bynum, Tavaris Tate, Daundre Barnaby and Emanuel Mayers ran a 3:11.81 to take first place. Barnaby secured the first victory of the day just minutes before the relay when he ran 47.36 to take first in the 400m dash.
Other Top 10 finishers for the Bulldogs were Marcus Jackson who came in fifth in the high jump (7-00 ¼), Jarrett Samuels with a seventh place jump of 23-00 ¾ in the long jump, D'Angelo Cherry whose time of 6.63 placed him third in the 60m dash, sixth place finishing Ed Wesela in the shot put (56-01 ¼) and Anthony Bynum who took second in the 200m dash (21.44).
"It was a good day for our guys," commented Dudley. "To come away with two victories against this level of competition is something to be proud of."
MSU will have little time to rest and prepare as they will return to Birmingham on Wednesday, Jan. 25, for the UAB Invitational.
