Bulldogs Bring Home Top Finishes At Birmingham Invite
January 27, 2012 | Track & Field
"You cannot ask for anymore than our athletes gave today," coach Steve Dudley said. "I always ask that the team simply be better than they were the day before and today that was the case."
Leading the way for the Lady Bulldogs was freshman Erica Bougard who took first place in the pentathlon. Bougard's 3840 points placed her third on the MSU all-time list and just ahead of teammate Keisha Wallace who finished third with 3559 points.
Navigating their way to Top 5 finishes for the Maroon and White women were Jessica Merriweather (5-07) and Alyssa Hall (5-05) who took second and third in the high jump, as well as Racquel Farquharson who ran a time of 8.76 to take second in the 60-meter hurdles. Merriweather, Hall and Farquharson were also joined in the Top 5 by Favian Cowards who took second in both the weight throw (58-03) and shot put (44-09) and Anna Jarman who took third in the 3000-meter run (10:08.79).
Claiming victory for the Bulldogs were Ed Wesela in the shot put (54-10 ¼) and Jason Harper in the triple jump (48-07 ¼), as well as Daundre Barnaby who ran 47.13 in the 400-meter dash to claim victory, set a new record for the Birmingham Crossplex facility and snag the fourth place spot on the MSU all-time list.
Three Bulldogs found their way to Top 5 spots at the end of the day. Trevarus Christian took third in the heptathlon with 4947 points, while John Valentine (8:34.38) and John Bourgeouis (15-01) both took fifth in the 3000-meter run and the pole vault respectively.
"Our athletes have seen a lot of action in the last month and things are not going to be slowing down anytime soon," Dudley stated. "We just have to get up each day ready to compete and to continue our quest to qualify for nationals and to continue to improve as a team."
After returning home from Birmingham, MSU will begin preparations to travel north to New York City for the New Balance Invitational on Feb. 3rd and 4th.
