Perper Wins As Lady Bulldog Tennis Falls To LSU, 6-1
March 13, 2011 | Women's Tennis
"We really fought hard today and I am starting to see improvement in both singles and doubles," coach Daryl Greenan said. "Alexandra Perper's win today was a huge boost for her confidence as well as the team's. It was also exciting to see Olesya Tsigvintseva really start to get her competitive edge because you need that in this league. This break will be good for our girls because we need the rest and we hope to improve before South Carolina."
Starting with doubles, State's pair of Olesya Tsigvintseva and Jordan Zachary fell behind early 6-1, on court 2. However, the pair came back to take the next two games but eventually fell 8-3 to LSU's duo of Keri Frankenberger and Yvette Vlaar.
In the top position, the Tiger tandem of Kaitlyn Burns and Whitney Wolf took down Lady Bulldogs Alexandra Perper and Jordan Zachary 8-3, clinching the doubles point for LSU. Roseline Dion and Vivian Pietraroia fell in the No. 3 position to Louisiana State's duo of Ariel Morton and Ebie Wilson.
In singles action, Wilson ousted Terpko in a two-setter on court 3, 6-0, 6-2. At the second position, Ryzhova fell to Burns 6-3, 6-1.
Competing in the No. 5 spot for Mississippi State was Pietraroia where she dropped the first set 6-0. However, Pietraroia battled to 3-4 in the second set but eventually fell Vlaar 6-0, 6-3. Lady Bulldog Dion battled on court 6 but dropped a two-set decision 6-1, 6-1 to Morton.
Mississippi State however, would not give up. Tsigvintseva dropped a quick first set 6-2 on court 4 but battled back to take the second set 6-2. The match was to be decided in a 10-point super tiebreaker and Tsigvintseva went up 5-3. LSU's Frankenberger seemed to keep the edge though as she battled back to take the third set, 1-0(8).
In the top spot for the Lady Bulldogs was Perper where she also dropped the first set 6-0. Perper fought her way back as she won 6-3 in the second set to send the match in to a final set. It was a back and forth affair as LSU's 52nd ranked Wolf would not give in. Falling behind 5-4, Wolf battled to even the match at 5-5 but Perper proved too much as she took the final two games to win the match 0-6, 6-3, 7-5.
The Lady Bulldogs are back in action on Friday, March 25 against the South Carolina. Match time is set for 2 p.m. CT at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre where admission to all MSU home matches is free.
