MSU Womens' Tennis Drops Tough Decision To ULM, 6-1
February 27, 2011 | Women's Tennis
"Today was a tough loss for us," coach Daryl Greenan said. "Louisiana-Monroe played hard and they deserved the win. I told our girls that this was going to be a battle from the beginning and unfortunately we lost that. We will have to dig a little deeper and get better this week."
Starting in doubles play, the Lady Bulldog tandem Alexandra Perper and Danielle Terpko picked up their second win in doubles on court 1 where they ousted ULM's pair of Medy Blankvoort and Letha Gaigher 8-3.
However, Louisiana-Monroe battled hard on court 2 where the Lady Warhawk pair of Claire Clark and Monica Winkel ousted MSU's duo Mariia Ryzhova and Olesya Tsigvintseva in a 9-7 thriller. The match clinching point came at the third position where ULM's tandem Ana Burjaili and Vivian Polak took down State's Elizabeth Hall and Vivian Pietraroia 8-5.
Turning to singles action, Louisiana-Monroe jumped out early where Polak took down Dion in two sets, 6-4, 6-1 in the five spot. On court 6, Gaigher took the two-set decision from Pietraroia 6-2, 6-2.
On court 1, Clark sealed the deal for ULM as she took down Perper 7-5, 6-3. In the third spot, Terpko battled to take the second set 7-5 after dropping the first at 6-3. Unfortunately, Winkel outlasted Terpko as she took the last set 6-0 and won the match.
Competing on court 2, Mariia Ryzhova took her first set 6-4 but dropped the second 6-2. However, Ryzhova proved too much for Blankvoort as she took the match in a ten-point tiebreaker, 1-0(4). Also going to a ten-point tiebreaker at the No. 4 spot was Tsigvintseva where she battled back to win the second set 6-4 after dropping the first 6-4. Burjairi, however, outlasted Tsigvintseva's efforts as she took the third set 1-0(5).
The Lady Bulldogs are back in action next Friday, March 11, as they play host to the University of Arkansas. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m. at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre where admission to all MSU home matches is free.
