Lady Bulldog Tennis Soars Over Southern Miss., 6-1

"This was definitely a win that we needed today," coach Daryl Greenan said. "Our girls are young and they needed to build some confidence for themselves. I was glad to see our girls respond after doubles play and we will hopefully carry this momentum over to tomorrow's match against Troy State."
It was a slow start in doubles play as Southern Miss. took the early 1-0 lead. On court 2, the Lady Golden Eagle pair of Asa Bengston and Elja Van Boren took down State's tandem of Roseline Dion and Danielle Terpko 8-1. Playing in the third position, the Lady Bulldog duo of Elizabeth Hall and Vivian Pietraroia fell to Southern Miss.' pair of Zoe Lee and Shannon Rogers 8-3.
However, MSU's duo of Alexandra Perper and Mariia Ryzhova battled their way to victory at the No. 1 spot, as they ousted USM's tandem of Stephanie Dellocono and Moorea Williams, 8-4.
Turning to singles action, the Lady Bulldogs notched a clean slate as they were victorious in all six spots. Lady Bulldog junior Ryzhova won her first set 6-0. This was a quick decision as Southern Miss.' Van Berlo withdrew due to an injury, giving Ryzhova the 6-0, 1-0 (def) victory.
Competing at the top position was Perper where she took home the victory over Bengston 6-1, 6-1. On court 4, MSU's Olesya Tsigvintseva took an easy victory as she ousted Rogers in a two-set decision 6-1, 6-2.
The match clinching point came from Terpko on court 3 where she took down Williams in an easy two-setter 6-1, 6-1. Terpko is now just three victories away from her 20th win as a Lady Bulldog.
At the No. 6 position, Pietraroia proved too much for Lady Golden Eagle Frances Askew as she posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory. In the final match of the day, Dion battled her way to victory as she ousted Lee 6-4, 6-4.
The Lady Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow February 20, as they play host to the Trojans of Troy State University. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre where admission to all MSU home matches is free.
