October 04, 2011 | Men's Golf
VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. - Facing one of the premier fields on the fall circuit, the Mississippi State men's golf team posted an 8th-place finish at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate behind Alex Rowland's 1-over-par 71 in the final round.
The Bulldogs' 291 landed them in eighth-place, just nine strokes out of a Top 5 finish. Texas captured the event crown with a 4-under-par 836, while Corbin Mills of Clemson claimed the individual title with a 9-under-par 201.
Rowland's 71 placed him in the Top 25 at 18th along with Chad Ramey (t13) and Tyler Smith (t24). MSU hasn't had a trio of Top 25 finishers since the 2010 season-opener.
Ramey finished atop the Bulldogs' leaderboard after the two-day event with a 6-over-par 216, while Smith carded a 10-over-par 220. Smith set a career-low round (70) and career-low 54-hole score (220) during the event.
Sophomore Barrett Edens notched a 226 while senior Lee Heaton turned in a 229. The event was Edens first three-round event of his career and second appearance overall.
Mississippi State returns to action on Oct. 17 in Shreveport, La., at the David Toms Invitational hosted at the Southern Trace Country Club.
