Bulldog's Round-Best 287 Leads Final-Round Surge
October 18, 2011 | Men's Golf
The Bulldogs managed to pull even with Ole Miss during the final round and within nine strokes of 11th-ranked LSU. Oklahoma ran away with the event with a 2-under-par 862 as Lamar followed with an 8-over-par 872.
True freshman Fletcher Johnson stormed out of the gates in his first collegiate tournament with a 72 before following it up with a 74 and 71 to earn a share of 10th. His 11 birdies led the team and was fifth-most in the tournament.
The Tupelo native's 72.33 scoring clip ranks him second to Alabama freshman Justin Thomas in the SEC.
"We had a good day as a team today in the tough conditions," Johnson said. "We feel like our team is getting close to where we need to be and I couldn't be any happier to finish in the top 10 at my first college event."
"Fletcher played very solidly for us in his collegiate debut," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "I don't think anyone in the field hit it any better tee to green than he did this week."
Alex Rowland followed Johnson with a 6-over-par 222 and a Top 25 finish, while Chad Ramey trailed him with a 7-over-par 223.
Ramey is currently fifth in stroke average among SEC players with at least nine rounds-played with a 71.78. He also ranks second among SEC underclassmen in scoring.
Lee Heaton carded a 226 while Tyler Smith used a 1-under-par 71 to close out the MSU leaderboard for the tournament.
Senior Andrew Noto of Louisiana Lafayette claimed the individual title with a commanding 8-under-par 208.
"I'm certainly proud of the way we came to play today," Homan said. "Tying the low round for the days shows what we are capable of. We just have to be more consistent and put three rounds together, not two and a half. We need to take this momentum and finish off the fall strong at the Bridgestone in 12 days."
The Bulldogs return to action on Oct. 29 at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate at the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
