Heaton's 1-Under Highlights Bulldogs' Fourth-Place Card
October 30, 2011 | Men's Golf
Heaton's third-place card is his first sub-par round of the season and ties his season-best round. The Oxted, England, native's five birdies were a team-high, and he is one stroke back of first place.
Due to inclement weather on the East Coast, the 36-hole day was shortened to 18. Originally slated for 54 holes, the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate will only be 36 holes.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead on Saturday and managed to hold on to a Top 5 card as chilly weather challenged the field. The team is four strokes back of tournament-leader and SEC-foe South Carolina with 18 holes remaining.
North Carolina and Virginia Tech are tied for second at 294. The Top 10 is only separated by only eight strokes, while the entire field is only 16 strokes apart.
"We didn't play our best, but we are in a position to compete tomorrow," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "Even though we struggled on par three's, we did a very nice job of making lots of pars on a cold, windy day."
Fletcher Johnson trailed Heaton on the Bulldog leaderboard with a 1-over-par 73. The freshman is only in his fourth collegiate round of golf and has shown his potential. Entering Saturday's round, he was second among SEC freshmen in scoring average.
In his first action since the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate, Axel Boasson narrowly missed a Top 25 card with his 75.
Alex Rowland and Chad Ramey entered the tournament as MSU's scoring leaders but struggled posting a 76 and 78, respectively.
Patrick Barrett or North Carolina and Albin Choi of North Carolina State are tied atop the individual leaderboard after firing 2-under-par 70's.
Live stats for the final round will be available through mstateathletics.com beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday morning. The Bulldogs tee off alongside UNCG and Purdue.
