MSU Rookie Perper Wins As Lady Bulldogs Fall To Oklahoma State
January 22, 2011 | Women's Tennis
It was a rapid start in doubles for the Cowgirls as they took down MSU at all positions. On court 3, OSU's tandem of Malika Rose and C.C. Sardinha bested the Lady Bulldog duo of Elizabeth Hall and Danielle Terpko, 8-2. Mississippi State's pair of Perper and Vivian Pietraroia were downed by the same score at the No. 1 position by Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Kanyapat Narattana of Oklahoma State.
The Lady Bulldog duo of Roseline Dion and Mariia Ryzhova fought a hard battle against OSU's pair of Sarah Meghoufel and Leyla Simmons at the No. 2 spot where they found themselves tied at 4 midway through the match. But the Cowgirls eventually claimed an 8-4 win.
With a 1-0 lead after doubles, Oklahoma State never let up as they took five out of six points in singles play. The first singles point went to Sardinha as she ousted Terpko in the third position, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 5 spot, State's Hall was unable to take home the victory as she was defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Rose. Narattana clinched the match for the Cowgirls by defeating Dion 6-0, 6-2 on court 4. Competing in the No. 6 position, MSU's Pietraroia dropped a two-set decision to Simmons, 6-3, 6-2. OSU's Shatkovskaya took down Ryzhova on court 2, 6-4, 6-2.
But the final point of the day would go to the MSU newcomer Perper at the No. 1 position. The Chisinau, Moldova, native upended Oklahoma State's Meghoufel, 6-4, 6-3. The win came on the heels of a tough three-set setback Friday night in her MSU debut.
"Alexandra was definitely a highlight and it's very exciting to see her competing at this level right off the bat," said MSU head coach Daryl Greenan. "These teams we played are on the level of some of the SEC teams we will face this year so hopefully we can learn a few things from these matches and work through them over the next couple weeks."
Mississippi State will be back in action on Friday, February 11, as the Lady Bulldogs open their 2011 home slate, hosting Georgia State. Match time is slated for 2 p.m. CT at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on the MSU campus.
