State Golf Posts Top Five Finish In Fall Opening Tournament
September 14, 2010 | Men's Golf
"It was a good start to the season," said head coach Clay Homan. "I liked the way we finished play today, but we started poorly and had to climb back, but we did and only lost by seven strokes. It was a good first tournament, but we have several things to improve before we go to Vanderbilt next week."
The Bulldogs improved as a team by two strokes in each round, posting a 284 in the opening round followed by a 2-under-par 282 and today in third round action MSU fired a 4-under-par 280 and moved themselves into a tie for fourth in the event.
MSU tied with Louisiana Tech, while Southeastern Louisiana finished third, Louisiana-Lafayette finished second and Kennesaw State finished seven strokes better than the Bulldogs to win the tournament.
State was paced by sophomore Brad Mason and true freshman Chad Ramey. Mason got things started where they left off last season as he led MSU at the SEC Championship last spring with a top 10 finish. In the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, Mason posted a career-best finish, tying for fifth after posting a 5-under-par three-round score of 208, another career best. Mason opened the tournament with a career-best 3-under-par first round followed with a 72 in round two and in today's action went for another round of 68 to slingshot himself into the top five of the individual field. Mason was also MSU's leader in birdies made with 15 through three rounds of action.
Ramey, playing in his first career collegiate event, also earned a top five individual finish while shooting his final two rounds at 5-under-par after going for even-par in the first round. Ramey also led MSU in pars made with 37 and was second among the individual field in par 4 scoring.
"He (Ramey) didn't play like a freshman," said Homan. "He also played the par 4s extremely well and kept the ball in the fair way consistently."
Sophomore Robi Calvesbert also had a career-best tournament, by tallying a 54-hole score of 211 which was 2-under-par. Calvesbert posted consistent rounds of 71-69-71 and finished in a tie for 12th, which was the Puerto Rico-native's best finish since last February. Calvesbert is also one of two Bulldogs to post eagles in the three-round tournament.
Sophomore Mike Genovese of MSU was consistent through three rounds of action with scores of 74-73-73 and finished in a tie for 51st while true freshman Axel Boasson, who was competing in his first career collegiate event, improved on day two of the tournament to bring his three round total to 221 and a tie for 58th among the individual field. Alex Rowland of MState competed as an individual, improving each round and shooting 4-over-par on the last day.
The Bulldogs turn their focus towards the Mason Rudolph Championship which will be played on Sept. 24 in Franklin, Tenn. at the Legends Club.
