September 13, 2010 | Men's Golf
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Mississippi State men's golf team enjoyed a successful opening day of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate played at the par-71 Hattiesburg Country Club in Hattiesburg, Miss. MSU stands in a tie for sixth following two rounds of action and are merely seven strokes away from the lead.
“We came out and played pretty well, but there is always room for improvement,” said head coach Clay Homan. “We need to do a better job of giving ourselves more birdie opportunities by hitting closer wedge shots.”
Following first round action, the Bulldogs were in a tie for fifth and stood at even par with a team score of 284. MSU improved its second round team score by two strokes, bringing its two round total to 566 for 2-under-par. State also led the field in par 4 scoring on the opening day.
Kennesaw State holds the lead after the first day with a two round total of 569, followed by Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana Tech with 560 and 561. Southeastern Louisiana and host-school Southern Mississippi round out the top five, while Arkansas State is tied with MState for sixth.
MSU was paced by true freshman Chad Ramey who is making his collegiate debut. Ramey opened with an even-par 71 followed by an impressive 3-under-par 68 in round two to go 3-under-par on the first day and is in sole possession of seventh in the individual field. Ramey was also the overall leader in par 4 scoring and tied for the tournament lead in pars made with 27.
Sophomores Robi Calvesbert and Brad Mason both had top 10 efforts today finishing the opening day one-stroke behind Ramey and are tied for eighth in the individual standings. Calvesbert posted consistent rounds of 71 and 69, while Mason went 3-under-par in the opening round and posted a 72 in round two.
