MOBILE, Ala. - The Mississippi State men's golf team is among the top 10 after the first round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. The Bulldogs are in eighth place among the 18-team field after firing a 297 in the first round and were led by sophomore Lee Heaton who was among the top 10 individuals and went for par on the opening day.

"I thought we were very close to putting together a solid round," said head coach Clay Homan. "We dropped five or six shots on our first two holes, but came back and played very solid in the middle of the day. We are still in good shape and in a position to move up the leader board."

MSU's 297 was 9-over-par, and only seven-strokes behind first-place Vanderbilt and four strokes shy of cracking the top 5.

Heaton led the Bulldogs on the opening day, matching par with a 72 in the first round, which placed the sophomore in a tie for ninth among the 102-player individual field.

True freshman Mike Genovese is second in State's lineup, shooting a 2-over-par 74 and posted MSU's only eagle. True freshman Robi Calvesbert finished the first round one stroke shy of Genovese, and led the Bulldogs in birdies made with four.

True freshman Brad Mason and sophomore Brad Thompson notched respective rounds of 76 and 77 to round out the Bulldog lineup.

Sophomore Brooks Bankhead competed as an individual, and tallied a 4-over-par round on the opening day.
