State Golf Through Second Round Of Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
February 22, 2010 | Men's Golf
"I thought we played the last few holes much better today than yesterday," said head coach Clay Homan. "We still had some mistakes that cost us, but we are still in decent position to climb up the leader board and finish off the tournament strong. We have to minimize our large scores and improve on our par 5 scoring."
The Bulldog linksters are 14 strokes behind the leader, Ole Miss, and five strokes shy of cracking the top 5.
True freshman Robi Calvesbert made a five-stroke improvement from the first to the second round, posting a 2-under-par 70 in round two and led the Bulldogs in birdies made with four. Calvesbert stands in a tie for 12th among the 102-player individual field and is 1-over-par through two rounds played.
Following his even-par performance in the opening round, State's sophomore Lee Heaton notched a 75 in round two and is among the top 25 individuals in the event, currently tied for 23rd. True freshman Mike Genovese is at 5-over-par through two rounds with a 36-hole score of 149.
Bulldog sophomore Brad Thompson improved four strokes in his second round play and set a career low for third round scores with a 73, and trails Genovese by one stroke and stands among the top 50 in the individual field. True freshman Brad Mason of MState has notched a two-round score of 153 to round out the Bulldog lineup.
MSU's sophomore Brooks Bankhead is competing as an individual and shot a career-best second, 71, to put the McKinney, Texas-native in a tie for 23rd among individual field.
State will conclude play at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate tomorrow, teeing off at 7:30 a.m. alongside host-school South Alabama ad Middle Tennessee.
