October 18, 2010 | Men's Golf
BATON ROUGE, La. – Improving eight strokes from their first round performance, the Mississippi State men's golf team find themselves in sixth place following two rounds of action at the David Toms Intercollegiate which is being played at the par-72 Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, La.
Following a first round that left the Bulldogs in a tie for eighth place with a team score of 293, MSU bounced back in the second round with a 285 and finished the first day with a team score of 578 and are merely 2-over-par.
The Bulldogs trail host-school and ninth-ranked LSU who leads the field with a 17-under-par team score, followed by eighth-ranked Arkansas who is 10-under-par, Middle Tennessee who is 7-under-par, South Alabama who is 6-under-par and North Florida who is 3-under-par.
“We played well, especially in the second round but I would still like to see one or two more guys get under part to help out the team score,” Coach Clay Homan said. “The guys are striking the ball well we just aren't holing as many putts as I would like to see us do. If we can step up our game on the greens we can move up in the standings tomorrow.”
The Maroon and White was led by junior Lee Heaton who is 2-under-par through two rounds of action and fired a team-best 70 in the second round of play. Heaton is currently in a tie for 15th among the 78-player field.
Sophomore Brad Mason trails Heaton by one stroke while posting consistent rounds of 71-72 on the opening day of play and is in a tie for 23rd in the individual field. Junior Alex Rowland of MSU set a career-best first round score of 73 and finished the day at 2-over-par and in a tie for 37th among the individual field.
Chad Ramey, a true freshman from Fulton, Miss., trails Rowland by one stroke. Ramey started out slowly with an opening round 77 but bounced back and tied Heaton for the lowest round of the day with a 70 in round two. Sophomore Robi Calvesbert rounds out the Bulldog lineup with a 36-hole score of 153.
Third and final round action is set to tee off at 8:40 a.m. CT. and live stats will be available at www.mstateathletics.com.
