October 12, 2010 | Men's Golf
The Bulldogs totaled an 872 three-round total, finished the third and final round on Tuesday with a 10-over-par 290 and finished the two-day event in seventh place.
Playing in the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate for the second-straight year MSU improved from last season's finish which was a tie for 10th among the 12-team field.
Three nationally ranked teams were able to separate themselves from the rest of the field while No. 23 Auburn won the tournament with an 11-under-par score of 859. No. 1 nationally ranked Florida was the runner-up with a 5-under-par showing and host-school and sixth-ranked Alabama ended the tournament with a team score of 2-under-par. Fourth place South Alabama was 19-over-par through three rounds at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate and UNLV rounded out the top five with a team score of 866.
Sophomore Brad Mason led the Maroon and White for the second time this fall and the fourth time in his career. Mason fired consistent rounds of 72-71-71for a 4-over-par finish. Mason finished in a tie for 13th among the 60-player field and was the second best in par 4 scoring. Mason also led the Bulldogs in birdies made with 10 and pars made with 32.
MSU's Lee Heaton finished in a tie for 21st and recorded MSU's only eagle of the tournament on the sixth hole in the third round. Heaton notched a 7-over-par 217, was among the tournament's leaders in par 3 and par 5 scoring and was tied for the team lead in birdies made with 10.
Playing in his second tournament of his career, junior Alex Rowland of State posted a three-round score of 221, finished in a tie for 32nd and was among the leaders in par 4 scoring. Chad Ramey's streak of being MSU's leader ended at two as the true freshman finished 37th among the individual field, one-stroke behind Rowland's three-round total and was tied for the team lead in pars made. Sophomore Mike Genovese was participating in his second tournament of the fall and ended the tournament with a 227 and was among the leaders in par 5 scoring.
"I felt we didn't play terrible and did some good things, Brad (Mason) played consistent but we need more consistency through our lineup and really need one or two each round to emerge," Coach Clay Homan said. "When your best scorer is still over par it is hard to make up any ground and we need that to give us that boost, and we have four or five guys basically playing the same and that doesn't bode well for a good team score so we need that guy to step up. But, we had the chance to play with some very solid teams in Florida, Auburn and Alabama and that was a good experience but we have to get smarter and do better."
MSU returns to the links on Oct. 18, competing in the David Toms Intercollegiate at the par-71 Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, La.
