NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. - Mississippi State's men's indoor track team made a statement in New York's historic Madison Square Garden by earning first place in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:19.44 at the 103rd running of the Millrose Games.
This marks the second time an MSU team has achieved medalist honors in this prestigious event, with the first coming in 1977.
"This marks the second time in history that we have won this event and getting a victory is what matters," associate head coach Steve Dudley said following the event, which was televised live by ESPN2. "This is a collegiate record for the Millrose Games and a great experience for our team to compete."
Earning the coveted Gotham Trophy was the talented quartet squad of Emanuel Mayers, senior Dwight Mullings, reserve runner Alex Richter and Starkville native Tavaris Tate, the top 400-meter runner in the nation last year as a high school senior.
"In any sport you have to put athletes in high pressured situations, and Alex faced one today running in the 4X400-meter relay," Dudley said. "However, our guys did a great job not letting any one push them around."
