Tsigvintseva Shines On Day One Of SEC Coaches Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Lady Bulldog sophomore Olesya Tsigvintseva picked up two wins on the opening day of play at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic, highlighting a hard-fought day for Mississippi State.
"I'm happy for our team today," said MSU assistant coach Max Fomine. "This is our first tournament and it will be our toughest. These girls have a great attitude though, and they are going to be successful. For some, it was their first taste of SEC play, and they handled it well."
Around 9 a.m CT, the first of two rounds of doubles began with three MSU tandems looking for their first action of the young season. After losing a tight 9-8 (4) match to the Ole Miss tandem of Conner Vogel and Pippa Reakes, the State duo of Tsigvintseva and Natalia Mayuk rebounded to pick up a dominating 8-2 triumph over Auburn's team of Jil Hastenrath and Plamena Kurteva in the third draw.
That was the only win MSU could garner in doubles, however, as State's Radka Ferancova and Danielle Terpko took an 8-3 loss to Dijana Stojic and Josefin Andersson of South Carolina, before dropping an 8-5 match to Auburn's tandem of Pauline Schippers and Caroline Thornton. Meanwhile, MSU's duo of Valeriya Makarycheva and Elizabeth Hall fell in their only match of the day, 8-5 to Ole Miss' Laura Van de Stroet and Soledad Podlipnik.
After doubles, it was on to singles play. Again, Tsigvintseva was the lone Lady Bulldog winner. She picked up a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the talented Keilly Ulery of Vanderbilt in the second draw. The remaining five MSU players lost in straight sets to end the day.
Mississippi State will be back in action tomorrow, playing one round of both singles and doubles, before rounding out the weekend on Sunday.
