State's Lastre, Cant Advance To Qualifying At ITA All-American
October 04, 2009 | Men's Tennis
"Tony (Lastre) and Louis (Cant) did a great job today," said head coach Per Nilsson. "They were both able to work on things and did not spend too much energy in their matches, so they should be feeling good for tomorrow's matches."
Following his two-win performance on Saturday, MSU's Lastre matched that showing with a pair of victories on Sunday. The first victory was a tight three-set battle against Nebraska's Francois Van Impe, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(8). Shortly following that, Lastre defeated Derek Drabble of Washington in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Lastre has yet to be defeated this fall season and now stands at 7-0 going into the qualifying round.
State's Cant, who also is undefeated in fall action at 6-0, started the day off in victorious fashion in identical sets, 6-3, 6-3, over Washington's Tobi Obenaus, and then reeled off another two-set win over David Thomson of North Carolina state, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the qualifying round.
Lastre and Cant will join sophomores George Coupland and Artem Ilyushin in qualifying action at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa. Based on their national rankings (Coupland No. 109 and Ilyushin No. 83) were already placed in the qualifying round which will begin on Monday, Oct. 5.
