OXFORD, Miss. - Mississippi State cross country teams ends competition at the 2009 SEC Championships on Ole Miss' muddy rain-soaked golf course in Oxford Saturday. The Bulldogs finished in 8th place in the men's 8K race, while the Lady Bulldogs ended the day with a 10th-place finish in the women's 6K race.
"We just didn't have a great day all around," head coach Al Schmidt said.
Alabama men's team repeated as conference champion, and Florida captured the women's title to snap Arkansas' three-year winning treak. Ole Miss' Barnabas Kirui won the individual title on the men's side with a time of 24 minutes, 24.75 seconds, while Florida's Rebecca Lowe won the women's individual crown after posting a time of 20:57.34.
Bulldogs Adam Lenz and Daniel Simpkins led a young men's team through the rough conditions to finish as MSU's top 2 runners. Lenz ran 26:20.44 to finish as MSU's top finisher, followed by Simpkins who ran 26:21.11 respectively. Junior Simone Domingue finished in 22:57.90 as the Lady Bulldogs No. 1 runner, while freshman Chloe Phillips was right behind completing her first SEC Championship race in 23:27.76.
"Our youth got us today," Schmidt said. "We had to rely on freshman on both the men's and women's teams, and in this league that's a hard thing to do."
With the SEC Championships completed, MSU cross country returns to prepare for the NCAA South Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Nov. 14.
"We still have Regionals to look forward to," Schmidt said. "Our freshmen ran the way you would expect them to run in their first SEC (Championships). The future looks bright for us, our younger kids just need time to develop and get older."
