STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Mississippi State soccer team battled the entire 90 minutes but dropped a tough 4-0 setback to No. 15 LSU Sunday afternoon at the LSU Soccer Complex in Baton Rouge.
The Bulldogs (8-6-2, 0-6-2) came out strong to open the match, creating an early scoring opportunity against the Tigers (10-3-3, 6-1-1 SEC). With 39:45 left in the opening half, sophomore Tarah Henderson beat a pair of defenders for a one-on-one opportunity, but LSU goalkeeper Mo Isom made a diving stop to deny State in its lone opportunity on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
MSU was out-shot by the Tigers 24-8 and managed just three efforts on goal. Senior Taryn Holland finished the match with seven saves, moving her 23 behind the SEC career record.
"LSU is probably the best team we have seen this year at possessing the ball and breaking down the defense," MSU head coach Neil Macdonald said. "I thought we played much better in the second half, but the first 45 minutes were the deciding factor in the match."
LSU scored all four goals in the opening half of play. The Tigers struck in the 11th minute when Malorie Rutledge centered a ball to Carlie Banks, who slid the shot into the back of the net for her first of two goals.
The Tigers extended the lead to 2-0 a minute later as Taryne Boudreau beat Holland on a breakaway opportunity.
Banks added her second goal of day in the 22nd minute, scoring after Allysha Chapman found her open in the middle of the penalty area. The Tigers' final goal came on a Courtney Alexander 10-yard shot in the 44th minute.
Holland turned back a pair of additional scoring chances, including a 25th-minute effort in which she managed to get a foot on a Kellie Murphy attempt.
State tried to fight back in the second half. In the 63rd minute, the Bulldogs managed to draw Isom from the net, but junior Ashley Hood's shot toward the open net was saved by one of the LSU defenders.
Three minutes later, the Bulldogs sent a ball into the box, but Isom stopped Monica Alvarado's header for one of her two saves in the match.
The Bulldogs close out their current five-match road trip on Thursday, taking on Vanderbilt in a 7 p.m. match in Nashville. State wraps up the home slate Oct. 25, hosting Kentucky at 1 p.m. at the MSU Soccer Field.
