NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Three goals in the final 20 minutes lifted Vanderbilt to a 3-0 win over the Mississippi State soccer team Thursday night at the VU Soccer Complex in Nashville.
Mississippi State (8-7-2, 0-7-2 SEC) played the Commodores (9-7-1, 3-6-0 SEC) to a stalemate the first 67 minutes of the match despite being out-shot 28-11 and 13-6 in on-goal efforts.
Freshman Jasmine Simmons paced the Bulldogs with four shots while matching junior Danielle Kite and sophomore Kim Pettit with a pair of balls inside the frame.
Senior Taryn Holland matched her season high with 10 saves on the night. Playing her final match in her home state, the Franklin, Tenn., native moved just 13 stops shy of the SEC career record held by former Georgia goalkeeper Nicole Williams.
Megan Kinsella slipped the deciding goal past Holland with 21:30 left in the match when she fired a ball into the left corner of the net from 12 yards out.
"Vanderbilt played really good soccer tonight, especially in the second half," Mississippi State head coach Neil Macdonald said. "They did a nice job of stretching us out, and we have to do a better job, especially with our positioning in the midfield. We now have to get back to work and start preparing for Kentucky at home on Sunday."
Kinsella's sister Molly extended the lead to 2-0 in the 80th minute as she netted a seven-yard breakaway that deflected off Holland's out-stretched hands. The Commodores picked up their third goal of the evening just 37 seconds later when Candace West took a pass from Megan Kinsella and found the back left corner of the net.
Vandy's three goals came after both teams battled to a stalemate in the opening half. VU out-shot the Bulldogs 10-4 in the first 45 minutes, but only put two more balls inside the frame than Mississippi State.
Holland came up with a pair of big stops late in the opening half to keep the match knotted 0-0. The first came on a Molly Kinsella shot from the right side of the 18-yard box with 18:15 left to play. Eleven minutes later, Molly Kinsella was awarded a penalty kick, but Holland made a diving stop on the Dana Schwartz attempt.
The Bulldogs return to the MSU Soccer Field on Sunday, closing out the 2009 home slate against Kentucky at 1 p.m. Holland and fellow seniors Hannah Tyler, Andrea Harrison and Katelyn Graben will be honored prior to the start of Sunday's match. Admission to all Bulldog home soccer matches is free.
