MSU Cross Country Brings Home Top 15 Finishes From Fayetteville
October 17, 2009 | Cross Country
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Mississippi State's cross country teams concluded competition Saturday at the 2009 Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival hosted by Arkansas with men finishing 11th out of 29 teams and Lady Bulldogs placing 15th out 34 teams.
Both teams finished ahead of SEC foe LSU. Oklahoma State won the men's team title with 21 points, while Texas Tech scored 35 points to claim the top honor for the women.
This was the first 10K race for the Bulldogs this season, and junior Adam Lenz remained the team leader finishing in 31 minutes, 25.83 seconds. Daniel Simpkins and Cameron Vincent were close behind finishing at 31:45.25 and 31:52.83, respectively.
"I think we competed a lot better today than we did last week (at Louisville)," MSU men's coach Houston Franks said. "I was very pleased with the effort our guys gave today, but we still need to do better running at a pack and finishing closer together."
The Lady Bulldogs lost some key runners due to illness and were led by junior Simone Domingue, who finished the 6K race in 22:27.81. Freshman Chloe Phillips and sophomore Loren Bruce stepped up to finish as MSU's No. 2 and 3 runners in 22:32.94 and 23:26.88, respectively.
"I'm happy with our results today," women's coach Al Schmidt said. "Loren, Chloe and Simone ran really well in their first 6K on a muddy bad course. The girls showed me everything I needed to see to help get us ready for SEC's."
