FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Mississippi State's Taryn Holland made seven saves on a cold Friday night, but Ally Atkins' goal with two minutes remaining lifted Arkansas to a 1-0 win at Lady'Back Field in Fayetteville.
MSU fell to 8-5-2 overall and 0-5-2 in SEC play, while Arkansas improved to 8-3-4, 2-3-2 in league play.
"It was a close game, but Arkansas created more opportunities than we did," Bulldog head coach Neil Macdonald said. "We didn't do a good job when we had the ball in the final third of the field. I'm disappointed because I thought we made some errors that cost us the match."
Atkins' game-winner came in the 88th minute when she took a ball, slipped past the Bulldog defense, and beat a diving Holland with a shot into the right side of the net.
The Razorbacks out-shot MSU 25-17 after State closed the gap with an 11-shot second half. Macdonald's squad had seven shots on goal, but was unable to slip any past UA goalkeeper Britni Williams.
MSU junior Ashley Hood paced the Dawgs with five shots, including two inside the frame. Fellow junior Kat Walsh fired twice in the match along with freshmen Monica Alvarado and Rachel Wannek.
State faces a top-15 team for the second-straight week on Sunday when it travels to Baton Rouge for a 1 p.m. meeting with No. 15 LSU. Sunday's SEC Western Division battle will be broadcast by Comcast Sports Southeast.
