JACKSON, Miss. - Mississippi State made the most of its first capital city appearance since 1989, knocking off Jackson State 27-25, 25-18 and 25-21 in college volleyball action Tuesday night in the T.B. Ellis Gym on the JSU campus.
In the opening set, the lead changed hands on numerous occassions before MSU managed a 27-25 victory. A service ace by Ioana Demian closed out that win for the Bulldogs. However, the ace was a rarity as MSU was plagued by five service errors in the opening set.
Things improved from there. The Bulldogs built early leads of 5-1 and 18-8 before cruising to the 25-18 win in Set 2. After that, the Bulldogs again built a large lead and held off a furious JSU rally for the 25-21 match-clinching victory.
For MSU, Demian finished with a double double, recording 16 kills and 11 digs, while hitting at a .370 percentage. Of the 16 kills, seven came in the opening set. Sophomore Kayla Woodard had a match-high 22 digs, while freshman Mandy Mellencamp had 12 digs. Cristina Jucan added nine kills and hit at a .460 clip in the match.
The Bulldogs now lead the all-time series with JSU, 15-2.
MSU returns home this weekend for the MSU Bulldog Club Invitational. The Bulldogs play Centenary at 12:30 p.m. Friday and Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. Friday. Also Friday, Central Arkansas and Memphis play at 10 a.m., while Centenary and Memphis play at 4:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Central Arkansas and Centenary play at 11 a.m., while MSU and Memphis close out the Bulldogs' non-conference slate with a 1:30 p.m. first serve.
All six tournament matches will be played in the Humphrey Coliseum with no admission charge.
