BATON ROUGE, La. - Defending SEC West champion LSU overcame a closely-contested second set and a 13-kill performance by State's Ioana Demian to register a 3-0 SEC volleyball win before 738 fans at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Tigers (14-9, 9-7 SEC) hit at a match-leading .448 clip and never trailed in posting a 25-18 decision in the opening set, then fended off a solid challenge by Mississippi State (6-20, 1-14 SEC) en route to a 25-23 decision that put the Tigers up 2-0 at the break. State scored the first two points of the third set and led 3-2 on a kill by Demian. But the Tigers came back to life in impressive fashion, reeling off 17 straight points and clinching the final set 25-4. Demian tallied a match-high 13 kills and led the Bulldogs with a .286 attack percentage. She received little backing on offense, though. Freshman Grace Hoyt trailed Demian with three kills. Demian registered seven over her 13 kills in the second set. Her sixth in the frame put State up 19-17. The Tigers were impressive at the net in the third set, tallying seven of the team's nine team blocks in the frame while limiting State to just two kills. Michele Williams hit .550 with 12 kills and six blocks while Kyna Washington registered 11 kills. The Tigers out-hit the Bulldogs .396 to .100 and amassed a 44-24 advantage in kills. MSU sophomore Kaitlin Wheatley of Lexington, Ky., drew her first career start. The Bulldogs close out their 16-match 2008 home schedule this weekend hosting a pair of SEC Western Division foes. State takes on Arkansas Friday at 7 p.m. before squaring off against instate league foe Ole Miss Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
