FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - State got as career-best 12 kills from freshman Faith Steinwedell Sunday afternoon but fell short in a bid to register a fourth consecutive win over SEC Western Division rival Arkansas. The Lady Razorbacks (5-12, 2-5 SEC) topped State in straight sets, winning 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 as MSU (6-12, 1-6 SEC) dropped its fourth straight league match. The rookie from LaJolla, Calif., backed a team-best 11-kill effort Friday night against Ole Miss with 12 of State's 28 kills against Arkansas. Junior Ioana Demian had six kills and sophomore Ashley Newsome finished with four and a team-best four blocks. Arkansas out-hit State .308 to .080 and held a 41-28 advantage in kills. Yun Tang led UA with 10 kills. Newsome's match-opening kill gave the Bulldogs the early lead in the opening set, but the Lady Razorbacks reeled off the next five points to take command of the first stanza. Steinwedell tallied six of State's 11 kills, but UA got solid balance, with six players sharing in a 15-kill effort that helped propel Arkansas to a 25-17 win. Despite falling behind early 4-1, the Bulldogs took the fight to the Lady'backs in the second set. Steinwedell served up an ace that gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the set at 7-6, and another ace by the Bulldog freshman moments later stretched the State lead to 9-6. Arkansas regained the lead at 14-13 on a Bulldog attack error and used a 5-0 run to extend its lead in taking the second set 25-20. State and Arkansas fought on near-even terms for much of the third set, with claiming a 15-14 lead on a UA attack error. But the next seven points went to Arkansas, and the Lady Razorbacks fended off a State charge to preserve the straight-sets win with a 25-22 decision. The Bulldogs resume their SEC schedule with a pair of home matches next weekend. State entertains defending SEC West champion LSU Friday at 7 p.m. and then takes on Georgia Sunday in a 1 p.m. match televised regionally by FOX Sports Net South.
