No. 10 MSU Claims Governor's Cup Victory Over No. 17 Ole Miss
April 28, 2026 | Baseball
PEARL - No. 10 Mississippi State struck early and never let No. 17 Ole Miss recover Tuesday night, rolling past the Rebels 7-3 in the sold-out Governor's Cup at Trustmark Park.
Kevin Milewski went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Jacob Parker added two hits and two RBIs and the Diamond Dawgs used a four-run first inning to take control of the neutral-site, non-conference rivalry matchup.
Mississippi State improved to 35-10, while Ole Miss fell to 31-15.
State wasted no time jumping on Rebels starter Owen Kelly. Gehrig Frei opened the bottom of the first with a single to left, moved to second on Ace Reese's groundout and scored when Parker lined an RBI single through the right side. Noah Sullivan, who walked earlier in the inning, came home on Bryce Chance's infield single before Milewski delivered the biggest swing of the frame — a two-run double to right that gave MSU a 4-0 lead.
The Bulldogs kept the pressure on in the second. Reese singled through the left side, advanced on Blake Bevis' single and scored when Parker shot another RBI single up the middle, pushing Mississippi State's lead to 5-0.
That was more than enough for a Mississippi State pitching staff that piled up 13 strikeouts and held Ole Miss to five hits. Brendan Sweeney started and worked three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out four. Maddox Miller followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings and earned the win to improve to 4-2.
Ole Miss finally broke through in the sixth. Topher Jones walked, Brayden Randle was hit by a pitch and Collin Reuter doubled to right center to score both runners. Dom Decker later singled up the middle to plate Reuter, trimming State's lead to 5-3 and bringing the Rebels within striking distance.
But Tyler Pitzer steadied the game for the Diamond Dawgs. After entering with two runners aboard, Pitzer walked Tristan Bissetta to load the bases but struck out Judd Utermark looking to end the threat and preserve the lead.
MSU answered immediately in the bottom half. Milewski singled to right center, moved to second on Drew Wyers' sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on Frei's infield single. Reese then lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Milewski and giving State a 6-3 cushion.
The Bulldogs added another insurance run in the eighth. Aidan Teel doubled to center, Milewski followed with his third hit and Wyers dropped down a bunt that brought Teel home when Ole Miss reliever Landon Koenig threw wildly to first.
Dane Burns closed it from there, earning his first save with two perfect innings. Burns struck out two and retired the Rebels without allowing a baserunner.
Milewski led Mississippi State's 12-hit attack and was named the game's Most Outstanding Player. Frei and Parker each had two hits. Reese drove in two runs, and Chance added an RBI as the Bulldogs improved to 4-0 against Ole Miss this season.
Kelly took the loss for the Rebels, allowing five runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings. Utermark struck out four times and stranded seven runners for Ole Miss, which left 10 men on base.
MSU hits the road for No. 4 Texas this weekend for a three-game series starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network+.
