COLUMBIA, S.C. - No. 17 Mississippi State completed a historic weekend Sunday, edging South Carolina 4-3 in 11 innings at Founders Park to finish the program's first-ever three-game sweep of the Gamecocks.
The Diamond Dawgs (30-10, 10-8 SEC) leaned on timely hitting, dominant pitching and steady defense to close out the milestone series win.
MSU grabbed the early lead in the second when Gehrig Frei reached on an error and Blake Bevis followed with a two-run homer to left field, scoring both runners for a 2-0 advantage. It was Bevis' fourth home run of the season and second in as many days.
The Bulldogs added another run in the sixth. Frei singled and Vytas Valincius followed with a base hit before Bevis brought home Frei on a fielder's choice to make it 3-0.
South Carolina (19-22, 5-13) chipped away in the bottom half when Jake Randolph singled home Will Craddock, then rallied for two runs in the eighth to tie it. Talmadge LeCroy delivered an RBI single and Randolph added a run-scoring groundout to even the score at 3-all.
After South Carolina's eighth-inning push, the MSU bullpen took over. Ben Davis and Maddox Webb combined to hold the Gamecocks scoreless the rest of the way, with Webb earning the victory after 2 2/3 scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
State broke through in the 11th when Valincius singled, pinch runner Gatlin Sanders advanced to third on a single by Aidan Teel. Kevin Milewski lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Sanders with the go-ahead run.
The Bulldogs finished with 10 hits, led by Valincius' three-hit day. Bryce Chance added two hits, while Frei scored twice.
Mississippi State starter Charlie Foster turned in a career performance, striking out a career-high eight batters over seven innings. Foster allowed six hits and three runs while keeping the Gamecocks quiet through the first seven frames.
The victory gave Mississippi State its 30th win of the season and continued a strong surge in SEC play as the Diamond Dawgs head into the final stretch of conference action with momentum.
MSU returns to Dudy Noble Field to host Memphis on Tuesday at 6 p.m. on SEC Network+.
